sacred stool

“For this rite of self-fumigation every family of gypsies has also what is called an ‘Ateshkaini’, that is a stool of special form which they regard as sacred; and this whole ritual of theirs they perform with the aid of this sacred stool. BTG XLII

“The sacred stool consists simply of a small board to which four iron legs are fixed; and by this means it is possible to stand in the Tandoor without burning one’s feet in the hot ashes. BTG XLII

“As each member of the family stands on that sacred stool, all the other members of the family sing their sacred canticle, while the one standing upon this stool slowly and solemnly, bending the knees, lowers and raises himself and at the same time recites prayers. The custom requires that he should do this until every part of his sex organs has been warmed by the Tandoor. BTG XLII
